June 2008 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth
U. S. stock market fell hard in June 2008, so did our paper wealth (because most of our assets are stocks with only value on paper). When the Dow closed the month at two-year low, there isn’t really anything good […]

June 2008 Net Worth Update: -6.4%

Ouch! June was a rough month for our portfolio. Our portfolio decreased -6.4% in June, that brings us to 968% total increase since the beginning of our dollar plan.

In addition, our year-to-date return is -7.7%.

Reflections on my portfolio this month
I just moved a portion of our portfolio to a CD ladder. I just […]

Net Worth Update - June 2008

It’s the middle of the month, so it’s a time to take a look at my net worth. Due to the stock market slump it slumped a little bit. It’s specifically down about $3,000 from around $220,500 to $217,380. The first half this year has been disappointing to me, because I really thought I’d be making more money that I’m spending. That speaks a little to the splurges that I’ve made, like my Asus EEE, but it really is about my income. I expected my websites to make more money. Maybe it’s the economy, or […]

May 2008 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth

Original post on The Sun’s Financial Diary
It’s that time of the month again to see how we did in May.
After seeing a robust 9.25% growth in April, our net worth changed modestly last month, gaining 2.11%. That’s the second consecutive monthly increase. As of May 31, our net worth is at $605,520.98, up $12,489.11 from […]

Net Worth Update - May 2008

It’s the middle of the month, so it’s a time to calculate my net worth. For the last 5 months or so, I’ve been pretty much break even - spending almost exactly what I’ve earned. This is not a long-term recipe for success, but it’s a lot better than many people do when starting a business. Of course, I’m aided greatly in that this website makes some money, I do some contract work on the side, and my wife earns a very good income (my net worth doesn’t take her money into account).
Due to a small surge […]

April 2008 Net Worth Update: +3.8%

April was a wonderful month for us. Nothing special, but we finally have an increase in our portfolio after negative returns the last three months. I’m usually more focused on the long term, but reporting it each month to you made me start to notice. As my two-year-old would say, “I’m a happy camper!”
During […]

April 2008 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth

Original post on The Sun’s Financial Diary
After five straight monthly loses, we finally saw some meaningful increase in our paper wealth in April, thanks to a strong showing in the stock markets. Our net worth has suffered huge losses since last November when stocks peaked and started trading lower and lower amid financial market turmoil. […]

Net Worth Update - April 2008

It’s the middle of the month, so it’s a time to reflect on my net worth. I’ve been very happy to break even lately as I focus on making my businesses grow - while trying to slow down from the rat race.
April came as a very pleasant surprise - the stock market rebound had boosted my net worth $10,000 - to $218,825. This is despite the value of my Boston property reaching an all-time low. If that returns to the norm, it would add another $20,000 to my net worth.
Last month, I had mentioned taking a part […]

March 2008 Net Worth Update: 0.0%

After two months of portfolio declines, we finished March at no change! Yes, you read that right. Our portfolio value finished the month with less than $100 difference from March. I think that is the first time ever! Our year to date total remains at -7.0%.
Our total percent increase since the beginning of […]

March 2008 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth

Original post on The Sun’s Financial Diary
Just when I thought maybe the worst was over last month after seeing a negligible drop in our next worth in February, we were hit again in March as the stock markets continued to struggle, though the amount lost on paper is as bad as the first couple of […]

February 2008 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth

Original post on The Sun’s Financial Diary
The harsh reality that the Dow lost more than 430 points in the last two trading days of February didn’t help when it comes the time to count our nest eggs. In fact, the benchmark held a little gain when the market closed on February 27th. But all three […]

Net Worth Update - February 2008

It’s the middle of the month, so I’m doing my usual look at my finances. Just a few minutes ago I logged into my 20+ financial accounts and update my Excel spreadsheet. It’s a lot of work to have 20+ financial accounts, but each of them serve a purpose. Overall, I ended […]

January 2008 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth

Original post on The Sun’s Financial Diary
What used to make us, now broke us.
For a third time in a row, our paper fortune dropped after the broad market suffered deep decline in the first month of 2008. Our calculation showed that at the end of January 2008, our net worth, excluding house and vehicle […]

Net Worth Update - January 2008

I missed posting this in the middle of the month; I wanted to get some articles posted last week that I felt were more interesting. I did manage to grab a snap shot of my accounts from the 15th. With the stock market dropping like a ball on New Year’s Eve, I knew […]

Net Worth Update - December 2007

It’s the middle of the month, so it’s time to review my net worth - or lack there of. Fortunately, despite not having a day job anymore, I was very pleased to see some gains in the bottom line. Last month I finished with $214K. This month, my net worth is $219K.
Here […]

Net Worth Update - November 2007

It’s a little past the middle of the month, but this is the earliest I could get this update in. This is the first month where I didn’t have a typical day job, so I expected a drop. What I didn’t anticipate is a big drop in the stock market combined with a […]

September 2007 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth

When the stock markets had the best September in 34 years, it’s hard not to make money, big money and that was indeed what happened to us last month. In fact, we saw so far the biggest jump in our net worth since I started the tracking in August 2006. For the month, the Dow […]

Net Worth Update - September 2007

It’s the middle of the month and as regular readers know, that means it’s time to calculate my net worth. Last month, my net worth dropped from 207K to 206K - pretty good performance considering the drop in the stock market hurt my retirement accounts. This month, I’m up $4500 for a […]

August 2007 Score Card — Part I: Net Worth

I just realized that I have been tracking the growth of our net worth for more than a year already. One year ago today, we had a total of $369,550 without including house and car related items. Here’s a picture of our net worth at the end of August 2006.

How are we doing one year […]
